This week continues my “Best of” series, where I scour the internet for the best low carb and/or Paleo friendly recipes in a regional food category. So far I’ve compiled roundups for the best Mexican, Italian, and Asian inspired recipes. This week it’s time for some Indian food!
There are those of you who will be super excited about this, while others may be like “Meh, what’s so great about Indian food?” I encourage you to read on and at least peruse the photos below, because if you haven’t really had a chance to try some traditional Indian favorites, you may be surprised to find how absolutely delicious they are!
Many of these recipes are authentically Indian, others are more Indian-inspired or from a nearby region so I included them. Please don’t email me about how a recipe “isn’t technically Indian because” (insert whatever complaint here.) I’m not trying to be a purist about it – just bringing your attention to some great low carb recipes with an Indian flair, mkay?
Some of these recipes are low carb, some of them are Paleo – so you might have to make a substitution or two to suit your own dietary needs, any changes should be minor though.
This list contains low carb main dishes, side dishes, condiments, and even some desserts so go nuts! Pick a few to try out and then invite some friends (and me, definitely me!) over for a Bollywood party!
If you’ve tried any of these recipes already (or do try them after perusing this list) please let us know how they were in the comments!!!

May…so. DANG. RUDE!!! Her recipe is perfect for people transitioning. If you’re sick of something be sick of your crappy attitude when you convey a “tip” Your experience is not everyone’s…keep up the good work Mellissa.

Thanks for the support Toni!

Melissa, the Onion Bhajis from Frugal Feeding DO NOT WORK when you replace gram flour with coconut flour. You are doing the original recipe an injustice by putting it on here with that suggestion. I am quite heartily sick of people posting ‘recipes’ or ‘variations’ in your case, online that they in fact have not tried themselves and that ultimately fail. That costs me time and money. Firstly, to adapt the Bhaji recipe to work with coconut flour you have to add way more water than 60ml – more than two cups to get things properly moistened. Then – you don’t have anything holding the mixture together – so I added psyllium seed husk (3 tbs) as this works in other veggie fritters. Needless to say the bhaji’s soaked up the 3 tbsp oil in the pan and I had to add much more to get them cooked. They were inedible and I had to ditch the rest of the (very expensive) coconut flour mixture. If you are promoting yourself as a recipe site – then please for goodness sake at least test the suggestions you make or your readers will never return. I for one, won’t. I’d rather go to Elana’s Pantry where I know every one of her recipes has been tested numerous times and where I won’t waste expensive ingredients on a dubious experiment. All this did for me was entice me with a misleading image and cause me to waste good ingredients.
Mellissa Sevigny says
Your complaint is valid and I’m very sorry that you wasted ingredients. I’ll remove the Bhaji’s from the list until I’ve had time to come up with a low carb version that I’ve tested myself.

Thanks for your reply Melissa, and for being big enough to acknowledge it. I’m sorry if I was a little harsh – I do appreciate your site and your work. I was just a little frustrated.

I totally understand May – thanks for coming back!

Hey Mellissa ,
Sweet list you have here. Good job on that.
Would you add a list of vegetarian paleo indian dishes too please.
Why?
In India most of us don’t eat meat every day and many of us are lacto vegetarians.
So on that count, would you please add a list of vegetarian paleo indian dishes too.
Mellissa Sevigny says
I’ll get started on that, thanks!

I was in the middle of buying a new house last April and the last 8 months have been a blur for me. A fall, broken wrist and two hand surgeries to repair the damage. I’m just now seeing this post and want to thank you for including my Chicken Almond Soup recipe, Melissa. I hope your readers try and enjoy it as much as we do. BTW, there are some wonderful recipes in this post!!

Can you advise of the nutrients please.
Thank you
Mellissa Sevigny says
Sorry but no. I do provide nutrients on all of my recipes here on IBIH but doing so on all of these other recipes would require many hours that I don’t have. If you’d like to try one and need to know the nutrition info I recommend a site like My Fitness Pal or Calorie King.
