If you’ve got hot dogs and ground beef, you can make this easy Keto Chili Dog Soup in just minutes! A guaranteed crowd pleaser, this is an easy keto dinner recipe the whole family can enjoy!
So let’s talk about this Keto Chili Dog Soup recipe! Hopefully you don’t think it sounds weird – it kind of felt like a no-brainer when I was making it! Then I tasted it and I knew it was going to be a winner!
It’s super easy (which you know I love) and the flavors are fantastic! I recommend using a good quality hot dog, preferably with a natural casing so you get that snap when you bite into them – perfection!
I spent a large part of my childhood in New Britain, CT and there is a famous hot dog joint there called Capital Lunch. Have any of you heard of it? They make the best chili dogs EVAH, and have been featured in numerous magazines and foodie television shows because of it.
When I was growing up we lived within walking distance of Capital Lunch and I remember heading over there often because you could get two amazing chili dogs, a can of soda, and a bag of chips for around $1.50 – crazy cheap and oh so satisfying!
They get their hot dogs from right around the block at Martin Rosol’s, which makes natural casing hot dogs, red hots, and some of the best kielbasa around. I used to love it when my mom would come home with that white cardboard box tied with twine because I knew what awesome deliciousness waited inside. No summer picnic was without them!
Anyway, this keto chili dog soup is an ode to my childhood and the Capital Lunch chili dogs – though I’m not claiming in any way that the chili flavor in this soup is as good as theirs. That would be blasphemy!
My personal favorite way to eat a chili dog is with mustard, raw onions, and good quality sauerkraut, so that’s what I topped my Keto Chili Dog Soup with. I also added cilantro and avocados because I had some and I like them on my chili – it definitely worked for me on this low carb chili dog soup as well.
The beauty of this Keto Chili Dog Soup is that it makes the perfect base for whatever your favorite chili dog toppings are! Love cheese on yours? Throw some on there! You can prep a variety of toppings for your family or friends and let them all customize their bowls.
In fact this low carb chili dog soup would be a great Superbowl party recipe – you can make a huge batch and throw it in the crockpot, then prep a bunch of toppings and let people have at it! I guarantee it will be a huge hit!

Do you brown meat first?
Allison Keith says
Wow, such great flavor! I added mini yellow bell peppers and celery to the soup while it was cooking. We used green onions, cilantro, avocado, and pickled jalapenos for the toppings. Really hearty for a cold winter evening!

I’ve been trying out keto recipes on my diabetic husband to coax him toward a keto diet. This is his absolute favorite! He says he could eat this soup and the Egg roll in a bowl all week long!

Mellissa Sevigny says
That’s fantastic to hear Karen, please thank him for me!
Alyssa says
This might be a dumb question haha – but am I supposed to brown the meat before step 1?
Cindi says
Not a dumb question because I came on here to ask that. I wish she had answered it for you though!
Emily Cummins says
I was wondering the same thing :). Someone already asked that question and she said “no”, you don’t need to brown the hamburger or cook the hotdogs prior to step 1.
Jessica says
I love a good bowl of chili and this recipe delivers! Easy and delicious!

This recipe was absolutely DELICIOUS, however the servings turned out a bit wonky over here. My husband and I each had a bowl 3/4 full and the recipe made 3 servings. If you were eating this as a side dish, maybe it could be 6. For a full grown adult, I’d say it makes 3 reasonable servings. This definitely is something to consider when doing keto or low carb, because I’m not in the business of starving, but this was outside of my carb count at a reasonable and filling amount.

I too wondered about the serving size. It says at the top 6 servings. In the nutrition section it said serving size = 2 Cups. My soup made 5 cups total.. Mellissa could you address this?
Mellissa Sevigny says
I went back and checked and it was definitely an error sorry about that. You should end up with about 8 cups of the soup with the meat and all of the ingredients in it. Keeping it at a low simmer and not a hard boil will cut down on the evaporation, or you can partially cover it during simmering time. You should end up with 5 servings of about 1.5 cups each.

Looking forward to this recipe. Looks fabulous. I come from Cincinnati, Ohio, where the chili dogs… aka Cheesy Coney reigns supreme. It’s just like a chili dog only you add a gob of shredded Cheddar cheese on top! This recipe will go in my Keto Soup file! Thank you!
Calvin says
Avocado is great on everything, makes it even creamier and better. Very nutritious filling chili.

This was crazy simple but very good! Spring has finally arrived here last week but today is cloudy with drizzle so it perfectly suits the mood. Thanks! ?

I used a sprinkle of xanthan gum to thicken the soup slightly and it tasted awesome. We live in the New Britain area so I was able to use Martin Rosol hot dogs – delicious!

This sounds really good. I too am a chili dog fan. This would be really good during the cold weather. I would do away with the cilantro. I know a lot like it, but it isnt for me. I would add something else or just eliminate it.

But I love your recipes lol

I made this tonight for my family. Did it on the stove and let simmer for about an hour. Then served with topping options of fresh onion, prepared mustard and cheese. Everyone loved it – all 3 of my kids (ages 1 – 7) as well as my picky husband. I’ve come back to the site to print the recipe for permanent keeping. Thanks so much!

This soup looks delicious and hearty. I love to have protein in my soup keeps me warm and full. Will try your recipe :)
Nancy H says
I made this using geound chicken instead of ground beef. The chili was very watery. I used the crock pot cooking it on high for three minutes. But i also left the lid on. So not sure if that made a difference. Any ideas?
Mellissa Sevigny says
You can cook it down uncovered to thicken it to your preference, but it is a chili dog “soup” so won’t be quite as thick as a true chili as written. Also ground chicken will behave differently than beef and has less fat so will give it a thinner consistency and mouthfeel than with beef!
