This Keto Sunflower Butter & Cocoa Smoothie is a delightful departure from bacon and eggs for your morning breakfast – especially if you’re doing the Squeaky Clean Keto Challenge with us this month! SCKC, Paleo, and dairy free, it’s also sweetener free and Whole 30 friendly!

I love bacon, eggs, and avocado for breakfast while on keto, but I occasionally break it up with some Keto Cream Cheese Pancakes or Cinnamon Faux-st Crunch Cereal to keep things fresh. Unfortunately, since dairy and sweeteners are a no-no on the Squeaky Clean Keto Challenge, it can get tedious to eat a breakfast of mostly eggs all month.
So I created this keto sunflower butter & cocoa smoothie recipe (and the recently posted SCKC Strawberry Vanilla Smoothie) to break up your SCKC breakfast monotony! While it doesn’t contain dairy or sweeteners, it has a slight sweetness from the coconut milk and Sunflower butter that is juuuust enough to make you feel like you’re drinking something sweet and chocolatey!
Of course, if you aren’t on the SCKC or the Whole 30, then you can make this Keto Sunflower Butter & Cocoa Smoothie with almond milk and a keto friendly sweetener to it to make it even better!
I promise, that once you’ve cut all sweeteners from your diet though, even as is, this smoothie will taste so amazing that you won’t believe how delicious dairy and sweetener free living can be! ?
As is the case with all keto chocolate recipes – use the best quality cocoa powder you can get for the best results. The cheap canned stuff in the grocery store will do the job, but can sometimes be bitter or old – which means your Keto Sunflower Butter & Cocoa Smoothie (or anything else you make with it) will also taste bitter or just off. This isn’t so apparent when you’re masking it with lots of sweetener, but when you aren’t sweetening your recipes, the flavor of the cocoa will stand out even more.
Some of my favorite premium brands of cocoa powder are Saco, Ghirardelli, Valrhona, and Guittard, which can all be purchased on Amazon at very reasonable prices.

I haven’t tried this recipe for several reasons. I’m wondering about the efficacy of the “seed butter”. How is a seed butter healthier than a seed oil? Other than the processing, we know how horrible seed/grain oils are for the body, so I’m wondering about this butter in that context.
Question number 2: why do you use net carbs rather than total carbs? It’s much easier to know the total carb count and drastically reduces the chance of miscalculating for someone that persnickety….also, for diabetics it’s more beneficial to do the total carb count.
I will greatly appreciate your feedback and I wish I had known before now about your site with all the recipes and this challenge! I downloaded your weekly sample menu plans. Generally I intermittent fast for the better part of the day. When I get enough fat and protein, I simply don’t get hungry, so once or twice daily is sufficient for me. Thank you again!

Seed butter is simply blended seeds. Seed oils are highly processed using chemicals and changing the nature of the original seeds to an extent that it becomes very unhealthy. Some recipes contain total carbs, some do net carbs from way back. I prefer net carbs for tracking on keto, but if someone is “persnickety” or diabetic and their life depends on managing their carb count, they should be calculating their own carbs and not relying on a a website carb count for such an important metric.

Glad this cured your sweet tooth Jackie! It’s amazing how little sweetness it takes after you’ve gone without any sweeteners for awhile!

I use the brand, Thai coconut milk lite with only 2 ingredients since I have allergies to soy and preservatives. I love it in my coffee since it last longer in refrig. than the canned. The canned is very thick and great for recipes. I have not drank milk for 8 years now due to the high carb content but love heavy cream and H & H. I am diabetic and low carb /keto are the only recipes that keep my sugar in check.
Thank you for your website and for sharing all your wonderful recipes/menus.

I really hate the taste of coconut unless it’s fresh from the shell, so… is it okay to use unsweetened almond milk?
Mellissa Sevigny says
If you’re doing the squeaky clean keto challenge then almond milk is a no no but if not then yes you can substitute it – it won’t be as thick as with coconut milk though.

Do I use just the thick coconut cream from top of the can, or do I use the whole contents of the can, coconut water an all?
