This Keto Sunflower Butter & Cocoa Smoothie is a delightful departure from bacon and eggs for your morning breakfast – especially if you’re doing the Squeaky Clean Keto Challenge with us this month! SCKC, Paleo, and dairy free, it’s also sweetener free and Whole 30 friendly!
I love bacon, eggs, and avocado for breakfast while on keto, but I occasionally break it up with some Keto Cream Cheese Pancakes or Cinnamon Faux-st Crunch Cereal to keep things fresh. Unfortunately, since dairy and sweeteners are a no-no on the Squeaky Clean Keto Challenge, it can get tedious to eat a breakfast of mostly eggs all month.
So I created this keto sunflower butter & cocoa smoothie recipe (and the recently posted SCKC Strawberry Vanilla Smoothie) to break up your SCKC breakfast monotony! While it doesn’t contain dairy or sweeteners, it has a slight sweetness from the coconut milk and Sunflower butter that is juuuust enough to make you feel like you’re drinking something sweet and chocolatey!
Of course, if you aren’t on the SCKC or the Whole 30, then you can make this Keto Sunflower Butter & Cocoa Smoothie with almond milk and a keto friendly sweetener to it to make it even better!
I promise, that once you’ve cut all sweeteners from your diet though, even as is, this smoothie will taste so amazing that you won’t believe how delicious dairy and sweetener free living can be! ?
As is the case with all keto chocolate recipes – use the best quality cocoa powder you can get for the best results. The cheap canned stuff in the grocery store will do the job, but can sometimes be bitter or old – which means your Keto Sunflower Butter & Cocoa Smoothie (or anything else you make with it) will also taste bitter or just off. This isn’t so apparent when you’re masking it with lots of sweetener, but when you aren’t sweetening your recipes, the flavor of the cocoa will stand out even more.
Some of my favorite premium brands of cocoa powder are Saco, Ghirardelli, Valrhona, and Guittard, which can all be purchased on Amazon at very reasonable prices.

I use the brand, Thai coconut milk lite with only 2 ingredients since I have allergies to soy and preservatives. I love it in my coffee since it last longer in refrig. than the canned. The canned is very thick and great for recipes. I have not drank milk for 8 years now due to the high carb content but love heavy cream and H & H. I am diabetic and low carb /keto are the only recipes that keep my sugar in check.
Thank you for your website and for sharing all your wonderful recipes/menus.

I am going to try this recipe with Sunflower butter. Never thought about Sunflower?

I really hate the taste of coconut unless it’s fresh from the shell, so… is it okay to use unsweetened almond milk?
Mellissa Sevigny says
If you’re doing the squeaky clean keto challenge then almond milk is a no no but if not then yes you can substitute it – it won’t be as thick as with coconut milk though.
Sabrina says
Do I use just the thick coconut cream from top of the can, or do I use the whole contents of the can, coconut water an all?
Laura says
Mellissa,
Thank you so much for the amazing recipe! The flavor is A+! So creamy and delicious! One thing I was missing was the texture—I may have added too much ice, but is it intended to be liquidy or should it be a thicker “shake like” consistency?

What brand sunflower seed butter do you use?
Mellissa Sevigny says
Any brand with no added sugar will work!
Kristie says
Just made THE biggest rookie mistake… shamefully, as I’m no keto rookie. Never checked my sunflower seed butter for added sugar until the darn smoothie was staring me in the face! I had half of it. I wanted ALL of it lol Very good!

I love smoothies as a way to break things up too. This sounds really delicious!

I replaced some of the coconut milk with coffee – it made the chocolate taste stand out more.

Thank you for this idea! I wanted this today, but it is cold and wet here! So I took your idea and made a hot drink (BPC in essence) out of this recipe. It was great and I will make it often in the winter. I replaced all of the water with hot coffee, and obviously omitted the ice cubes, threw everything in the Nutribullet and enjoyed it very much! Thank you, Mellissa, for the recipe. :-)

Hi. Just now realizing there is a difference between cacao powder and cocoa powder. Can I make this with cacao powder?
Mellissa Sevigny says
yes!
Heather says
Can I use peanut butter if doing keto?
Mellissa Sevigny says
yes!

Hi Melissa,
I just tried the shake and liked it. It definitely tastes better with the sweetener but I could easily drink it without for the challenge when I am ready to do it. My biggest surprise was how much I liked the Sunbutter from Trader Joes!! I like it way better than almond butter and was eating it straight from the jar! Thank you for coming up with recipes for us non-egg lovers.

I’m assuming that for this recipe I need the coconut milk in a carton that is lower in carbs than the canned variety? Thank you for faithfully posting delicious and unique recipes! ?
★★★★★
Mellissa Sevigny says
You can use the carton stuff if it has no sweetener and isn’t cut with almond milk! Otherwise the canned (unsweetened) stuff mixed with water works great.
Kaia says
Is the coconut milk the one in a can, or the one in the refrigerated section?
Mellissa Sevigny says
If mixing with water use the one in the can, but if you can get a beverage in the refrigerator section with no nuts or sweeteners in it then just use that – no added water.
